How to Walk on Fresh Screed: Timing Guide by Type

Walking on fresh screed too soon is one of the most common and costly mistakes on any building project. It leaves footprint indentations, disrupts the screed surface, and can cause cracking in the early curing phase. This guide gives you the exact timings for every screed type so you can plan your programme accurately.
Liquid Screed (Anhydrite / Gyvlon)
Liquid screed sets faster on the surface than traditional screed because of its flow chemistry. As a general guide: do not walk on liquid screed for 24–48 hours after installation under normal UK conditions (15–20°C). In cold conditions (below 10°C) wait at least 48–72 hours. After the initial set, light foot traffic is possible but site operatives should wear clean soft-soled boots and avoid dragging equipment across the surface. Full structural curing takes 28 days.
Sand and Cement Screed
Sand and cement screed takes longer to achieve initial set. Wait a minimum of 24 hours before light foot traffic in warm conditions, and 48–72 hours in cooler weather. Do not allow wheeled traffic, scaffold boards, or materials to be dragged over the surface for at least 7 days. Full curing takes 28 days. The drying process continues well beyond initial set: a 75mm screed will still be releasing moisture at 28 days and may need considerably longer before moisture-sensitive floor finishes can be laid.
Fast-Drying and Polymer-Modified Screeds
Some screeds are formulated with additives that significantly reduce initial set time and accelerate drying. Fast-drying liquid screeds can be foot-traffic ready in as little as 3–4 hours and ready for floor finishes within 1–2 weeks at standard depths. If programme is critical, ask screeding.com about fast-drying options when you request your quote.
Protecting Fresh Screed on Site
Once screeding is complete, the area should be secured from other trades for the first 48 hours minimum. Polythene sheeting should not be laid directly on liquid screed during the first 48 hours as it traps moisture and can cause surface marking. After 48 hours, protect with breathable fleece if the screed must be trafficked earlier than recommended. Keep doors and windows closed to prevent draughts, which can cause uneven drying and surface cracking.
