Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about screeding, from screed types and drying times to costs and compliance.
General Questions
What is floor screeding?
Floor screeding is the process of applying a layer of material to create a smooth, level base for flooring finishes such as tiles, vinyl, or wood.
What types of screed do you offer?
We provide liquid screed, traditional sand & cement screed, fast-drying screeds, and resin screeds.
How do I know which screed is right for my project?
This depends on factors like project type, load requirements, drying time, and whether underfloor heating is installed. We’ll recommend the best option during your enquiry.
Drying & Installation
How long does screed take to dry?
Standard sand & cement screeds dry at around 1mm per day, while fast-drying screeds can be ready for flooring in as little as 3–5 days.
Can screed be walked on straight away?
Liquid and fast-drying screeds are usually walkable within 24–48 hours.
How thick does screed need to be?
This depends on the type of screed, load requirements, and whether underfloor heating is used. We’ll confirm during project planning.
Underfloor Heating
Which screed is best for underfloor heating?
Liquid screed is typically recommended, as it flows around pipes and transfers heat efficiently.
Do I need to remove laitance after installing liquid screed?
Potentially, some projects require laitance removal to ensure proper adhesion of flooring. We’ll confirm this during your enquiry.
When can I turn on my underfloor heating after screeding?
Usually after 7–10 days for liquid screed, depending on drying conditions.
Standards & Compliance
What are BS 8204 standards?
BS 8204 is the British Standard for screed installations, covering strength, durability, and surface regularity (SR1–SR3 tolerances).
Do you provide compliance testing?
Yes, drop hammer testing and BS 8204 certification can be arranged.
What is surface regularity (SR1–SR3)?
This measures how flat the screed is. SR1 = highest standard (perfectly level), SR2 = general use, SR3 = utility areas.
